U.S. Closes Investigation, Finds No Defect in Toyota Corolla’s Electronic Steering
Reuters news service reported today that federal auto safety regulators have “quietly closed” an investigation of complaints about steering involving model-year 2009 and 2010
Toyota Corollas.
Citing National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) documents, Reuters said
the investigation found “no electronic-related steering defects that would
compromise safety.”
Reuters said the nearly 15-month investigation closed on May 4. The investigation also
included the Matrix and covered nearly 750,000 vehicles.
The wire service described the finding as a significant boost for the company as it
seeks to regain consumer trust after questions were raised about electronics in
Toyota vehicles, pointing out that it comes three months after NHTSA and NASA
found “no electronic-based cause for unintended high-speed acceleration in
Toyotas.”
