Toyota Posts Impressive 41.8% Sales Gain in February from a Year Ago

Toyota Motor Sales (TMS) recorded a whopping 41.8 percent leap in sales for February compared to last February, and a 22.4 percent jump in sales over the month before, on a daily selling rate basis.

“Those results indicate TMS will outperform the industry on both a year-over-year and a month-over-month basis and show an increase to market share,” Bob Carter, group vice president and general manager, Toyota Division, told journalists in a conference call today. By contrast, he estimated that the industry was up 27 percent over last February and 21 percent over last month.

Carter added that the “No. 1 for a Reason” ad campaign launched last week contributed to an “especially strong close” for the month, with Toyota Division sales up 48.5 percent from last February and nearly 24 percent from January. Year-over-year, Camry sales were up 64 percent, Corolla up 52 percent, Highlander up 138 percent, Prius up 70 percent, RAV4, up 85 percent, Sienna up 118 percent, and Scion tC up 93 percent.

February also was a good month for awards. Toyota picked up seven “Best Overall Value” awards from Intellichoice, more than any other brand, and when combined with four awards won by Lexus, TMS accounted for more than half of all the Intellichoice awards presented. In addition, three Toyota brand vehicles – Prius, RAV4 and Sienna – made Consumer Reports’ 10 Top Picks, more than any other automaker. Toyota Motor Corporation also led all automakers with 20 of its models recommended out of 26 tested.

Lexus Division reported February sales up 0.2 percent from a year ago. “Based on the strength of the luxury market in February,” said Mark Templin, group vice president and general manager, Lexus Division, “I’d say we’re great at executing our sales plan, but we should have done a better job at reading the crystal ball. We underestimated the marketplace for the first few months of the year, and missed a few opportunities, but still hit our objective, and posted sales of 13,814, up from last February.”

Templin added that total Lexus SUV sales were up over 6 percent, and RX outperformed last year, up more than 15 percent. On the car side, ES and IS sales exceeded last year’s pace, up about 11 and 5 percent, respectively. Looking ahead, Templin noted that the all-new CT 200h goes on sale today and “Lexus is pulling out all the stops with one of the largest marketing campaigns in our history.”
