Toyota & Innovation
Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) is developing new technology to aid vehicles in
avoiding vehicle certain collisions by assisting the driver by helping control
the brakes and steering when sensors detect a potential collision. The
system uses millimeter-wave radar and stereo cameras to help detect pedestrians
and vehicles ahead. The system also emits near-infrared beams to increase
visibility at night.
TMC demonstrated the innovations for journalists Thursday at its Higashi Fuji Technical Center
in Japan. The company did not indicate when the system might be
available.
Other innovations under development include enhanced lane deviation prevention
technology, partial shielding of high beams to dim them for oncoming drivers,
and a steering wheel that measures the driver’s heartbeat to help prevent
crashes that occur when a driver experiences a potential impairment, such as a
heart attack.
