Daily Tips – Toyotathon 2009: Camry Occupant Collision Protection
Every year Toyotathon makes owning or leasing a new Toyota an even better deal than usual. While incentives help reduce the overall costs of ownership by sweetening transaction prices or finance terms the high value built into every Toyota doesn’t change.
Think Leasing! – December is an ideal time to look at leasing a new Toyota. Residual values may change in January and, with the change of year, may drop a percentage point or two. Combine currently high retained value projections with reduced prices and favorable lease terms and now is the time to become a the proud driver of a new car, Sienna, truck, or SUV.
With TFS Special Lease and Finance incentives to sweeten the deal:
Feature

Function/Advantage
All Camry models feature seven air bag supplemental restraints, front seat active head restraints, and front seat belt pre-tensioners and force limiters. All occupants have a 3-point seat belt and a head restraint.
Camry receives Good offset frontal, side impact, and roof strength ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and “5-Star” front and side impact ratings from the National Highway Traffic Administration.
Camry meets European pedestrian impact protection standard even though this is not a U. S. requirement.
Technical Information and Details
Camry has advanced multi-stage front air bag supplemental restraints that change the force of deployment based on the severity of the deceleration, the position of the seat, and whether the occupant is belted in.
Unique to Camry is the addition of a driver’s side knee air bag for added protection.
The front passenger seat is equipped with an Occupant Classification System that will turn off the passenger air bag is a weight that could be a small child is detected in the seat.
Side-impact air bags deploy from the seat back cushions into the space between the occupant and the door in the event of a side collision. Only the air bag on the affected side deploys leaving the other side for protection should it become necessary. The position of the air bag in the seat back ensures it is always properly positioned no matter the seat back adjustment.
Shield Curtain air bags deploy along with the side impact air bags but remain inflated to protect against broken glass, debris, and occupant ejection from the vehicle.
Seat belt pre-tensioners activate with the front air bags and remove the slack from the front seat belts helping to ensure the effectiveness of the belt. Force limiters act as “crumple structures” allowing the belt to absorb impact energy reducing stresses on the occupant.
Camry makes extensive use of high-strength and ultra high-strength steel in key areas of the unitized body structure tom manage impact energy without adding undue weight.
Toyota vehicles are built to Global Outstanding Assessment (GOA) standards that dictate that all will meet or exceed the most rigorous worldwide safety standards, whether required in each market or not.

I’ve been trying to decide between the Smart Car and Honda’s lineup. It’s a pretty difficult decision, I live in a somewhat small suburb and work within 2 km of my house. The convienence of the Toyota Prius makes it a nice choice, but is it necessarily better than the prius? My main problem with the smart car is its length and weight imagine getting hit by a any car you are practically history! What are your thoughts?
