Jam protection causes the power door opener/closer to reverse direction if resistance is encountered. When closing this helps prevent injury if a hand or some related part is in the way of the door closing, or damage to objects not all the way in the cargo area or inside the sliding Sienna side door. If the opening lift gate encounters resistance it will reverse direction reducing the chance of damage if opened in an area with a low clearance as might be found in a garage or under a garage door edge.
Pinch protection relies on contacts in the door weather stripping to stop the closing and reverse direction if a squeezed before full door closure. This keeps fingers and such from being hurt by a closing lift gate or power sliding door.
