EPS provides continuously variable assist tuned to provide the best steering feel to meet the “personalities” of the various vehicles.

ESP reduces maintenance costs, improves performance and fuel economy, and is environmentally better than hydraulic power steering. 

Technical Information and Details

Hydraulic power steering relies on an engine-driven pump to provide hydraulic pressure via hoses to assist the driver.  With most Toyota (and competitor) systems a high level of assist is provided at low engine speeds to aid parking and low-speed maneuvering.  At higher engine speeds less assist is provided to increase road feel as little assist is needed.

EPS is vehicle speed sensitive and provides the proper assist at all speeds.  Vehicles with a more “sporty” intent can be given a system with less assist while more “luxurious” models of the same car line can be made to steer more easily, all with essentially the same hardware.  This matches buyer priorities more closely.

Finally EPS can work with electronic vehicle stability control (VSC) to enhance the VSC’s ability to maintain directional control in emergency maneuvers making the system even more effective. 

EPS is found on Yaris, Corolla, Matrix, Highlander, Venza, and all hybrid models.
