Daily Tips – Toyota Safety Tips: 02/19 Toyota Center High Mount Stop Light

Having a solid understanding of Toyota safety technology is a need-to-have for a Toyota Sales Professional’s tool box.

If safety adds value to the vehicle, then Toyota’s commitment to the concept of Global Outstanding Assessment (GOA) should make all Toyota vehicles worth a fortune.  GOA leads Toyota to meet or exceed the toughest standard covering any category required anywhere in the world.  For instance, while head restraints are only required for front seat outboard passengers in the United States, Europe requires a head restraint at every seat.  Toyota meets the higher standard for vehicles sold worldwide (while domestic competitors often do not).

Toyota safety is divided between Passive Safety Systems and Active Safety Systems.  Passive safety protects the occupants in the event of a collision or accident.  Active safety is designed to avoid the accident in the first place.

Safety Feature

All Toyota vehicles feature a center high-mount stop light (CHMSL).

Advantage / Function

The CHMSL provides additional visibility to following drivers, reducing the likelihood of a rear-end collision.

Technical Information and Details

Studies indicate that placing a third brake light in a triangle with the two outboard lights reduces the likelihood of a rear-end collision by as much as 50%.  (Note that reflectors on farm and road work equipment and related vehicles is triangular.  There appears to be a psychophysiological advantage to this shape in terms of reaction times.)

While all vehicles are required to have a CHMSL, pointing out this effective safety feature to your safety conscious customer can build value.

 Customer Benefit

Active Safety

Particularly for owners who carry rear seat passengers, the CHMSL provides additional safety for rear seat occupants and all others.
