Daily Tips – Toyota Core Sedan Tips: 03/08 Star™ Safety System
The 2010 model year brought changes to the Camry that added power, performance, economy and comfort. Corolla saw active safety improve as the Star™ Safety system became standard equipment on all models and trims. Avalon continues to represent an exceptional level of comfort and luxury and with a styling change due very soon current incentives have added considerable value to the decision to purchase now.
All Toyota core sedans share a number of common features that give them their reputation for exceptional levels of quality, durability and dependability, and low ownership costs. We are around these vehicles day in and day out. We may begin to take a lot of things for granted.
It may be easy to assume that because your Toyota shoppers research heavily before they buy they already know all about these features and their benefits. That is often not a good assumption.
Through careful needs assessment you can determine what is truly important to your Toyota customers and present valuable information they are not likely to have found elsewhere. Remember, the sale only occurs when the customer’s perception of value exceeds the price you are asking for the car.
Feature
All Toyota models now feature as standard the Star™ Safety System.
Advantage / Function
The Star™ Safety System features antilock brakes (ABS), electronic brake force distribution (EBD), brake assist (BA), traction control (TRAC) and electronic vehicle stability control (VSC) to add to active (collision avoidance) safety.
Note: Most Toyota competitors offer traction control and stability control only on higher line models and in some cases even antilock brakes are optional.
Technical Information and Details
ABS and EBD combine to provide directional control during panic braking while shortening braking distance by applying optimum brake pressure to each wheel to avoid lock up and take advantage of available traction based on load.
As the best way to stop quickly and with control is by using the ABS and EBD, BA maximizes brake pedal pressure to give the driver full advantage of these functions.
TRAC reduces engine power and can apply braking to a spinning wheel on slick road surfaces allowing movement and directional control.
VSC monitors steering position, yaw and wheel speeds and can apply braking to correct for understeer (“pushing” or oversteer (“fishtailing”) both of which can create an unsafe condition that can led to an accident. According to Robert Bosch Electronics, the inventors of VSC, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has determined the electronic stability control is second only to seat belts in saving lives on the highway. This is made more impressive by the fact that all vehicles have seat belts but a relative few have stability control to date.
Customer Benefit
Toyota owners, their families and passengers benefit from a high level of active safety.
