Complaints of Unintended Acceleration in Toyota Vehicles Decline Sharply
As publicity about Toyota recalls involving floor mats and sticking accelerator pedals has declined, so have the number of complaints alleging unintended acceleration, reports Reuters.
The news service, citing National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) documents, said the number of acceleration-related complaints to NHTSA for Toyota and Lexus vehicles totaled about 1,500 between January and March. About two-thirds of these were in February, during the peak of publicity with congressional hearings and lawsuits.
Since then, the number of complaints for key models, like Camry, Prius and Lexus, has fallen from about 100 in April and May to low single digits in June.
The drop in complaints suggests that Toyota’s remedies are working. The automaker has made repairs or fixes on 1.7 million, or 78 percent, of the vehicles affected by the sticking pedal recall and on 2 million, or nearly 40 percent, of the vehicles affected by the floor mat recall.
